RE: [Ancientartifacts] Re: Naqada Black-topped vessel - is it genuine?

OK DIK...... PEACE AT LAST! (I hope)?!

Yes I remember my message. That related to a completely DIFFERENT pot you great NOODLE! Rather boring at first glance, it's flattish, undecorated, but delicate…. VERY delicate… and chipped! I'll post a picture so as all can see and maybe help repair it? It's NOT a Black Top!

Good night everyone.

John

P.S. The reserve on my much discussed Black Top is $2,000.00 USD.

Do you remember your message of 20 feb.

HELP NEEDED – POTTERY REPAIR

Hi Everyone!

I've recently acquired a Late Naquada bowl which was unfortunately
slightly damaged during shipment. Can anyone recommend a craftsperson
in the UK who may be able to restore this item?

Best wishes

John Andrews
Antiqus-2000

Of course this was a different pot.
I hope your customer does not take any aceton on the glimmering grey parts of the rim ;-).

Sorry if I offended you. Please start your group I am honered to be the first one to  tell a reference story about your antiquities business.

I hope we still can have some beers sometime in good harmony,
All the best,
Dik

PS You may pay for the beers, that is the least you can do.

Thank you for your kind comments Dik. My advice to you (and this is sent with good wishes and a bit of humour), is that you pull your finger out of the dyke, stop smoking pot… and invest in a new pair of glasses.
There are absolutely NO repairs to this item… NONE!
As a matter of interest I am starting my own yahoo group. It's called "We hate Antiqus-2000" You can be my first and honorary member out of the three or four we expect to attract over the next few months.
Your outbursts remind me of the bad old days of this group and the so called "Flame Wars".
I remember that we sadly lost a number of respected dealers and collectors during those dark times.
This will be my last comment on the subject. Antiqus-2000 has never knowingly been involved with selling fake antiquities and we never intend to be.
Thanks again and kind regards as always…
John

Hi John,

Can you also shed some light on the restorations, or are they also gone ;-).

Hi everyone, and many thanks for your comments and interest in this piece. To shed a little more light on the history of this item, I can tell you that it was excavated or purchased by Dr Miles Sagot during the late 40's to early 50's in the Nagada region.
I have acquired a number of pieces from his daughter and may be able to provide further provenance or "find notes" relating to each artefact. Unfortunately, all of these documents have been removed from the original finds and stored separately in a box. (And… hand written in French)!
Kind regards

Chris's son (also Chris) is one of my Egyptology tutors (we have been studying Predynastic this term), he is an ex-curator at the Ashmolean where they have  the 'world's best' predynastic collection so his opinion is as close to definitive as anyone's!  He saw the pics of this item and he thought it was okay.  Personally, I agree the shape is not typical -  the flared top is very pronounced, the parallel sides and the foot on the base unusual.  It's  also been pointed out that the gradation betweeen black and red is very sharp and is usually softer.  Red & black pots were made from the Badarian period right through to Naqada III so there is a considerable variety of shapes found.

It looks like OK . Dificult to say since they're easy to forge in my opinion .

as the one offered by Antiquis 2000. It flares quite a bit at the top and then becomes
bulbous near the bottom. All the ones I've seen have a more even curve from the lip to the
base? I'm no expert on blackware but I wouldn't buy it just because it looks odd to me.
