The investigation began in May 2007 as a result of a particular incident involving the international antiques market: the proposed private sale in the province of Modena, of three ancient paintings of great value:
oil painting on canvas, seventeenth century, depicting the 'Massacre of the Innocents', by painter Giovan Battista Paggi;
oil painting on canvas, seventeenth century, depicting the 'Bishop' by painter Mattia Preti;
oil painting on canvas, eighteenth century, depicting a 'dove with Nobiluomo' by the painter Francesco Mola.
The Carabinieri, therefore, have released information about the suspect, an advertising entrepreneur who sought to market the paintings, which in the meantime, according to the database of Cultural Heritage, were found to have been stolen from private homes in the years 1974, 1994 and 2006.
The development of the investigations made it possible to identify and seize both at the suspect's address, and commercial channels, other assets of illicit origin of art, stolen from homes and places of worship in northern Italy, as well as numerous archeological finds illegally held.
