Virtually every one I see on eBay and at shows called Rev War or
Civil War are from Bulgaria. I have sold dozens of them for $12 - $20
to Civil War dealers and they walk across the aisle and tag
them "Confederate fire steel, found in Virginia" or such for $200 +.
Stick them in a brass or tin snuff box with a gun flint and the price
is higher. I have never seen one dug here but there is much I haven't
seen.
Of course, when antiquities dealers have them, they are
generally "Roman soldier's flint striker," never an illeterate
farmer's striker.
I am wary of the ones with fancy bronze handles.
Here is one site:

The Viking ones are exactly like the ones that come from Bulgaria.
