Subject: [Ancientartifacts] Re: peru

I've included photos of the fake Moche blackware item from Jorge
Lanas in the photo group, Fake Perularedo.

The second photo of the dog shows where the black pigment around the
neck weld came off when I tried to wash away the dirt with water.
Imagine, buried nerly 2000 years and the pigment comes off with tap
water. Also note the head and the body have different surface
textures with the head being rougher and more porous with a matte
finish.

The third photo is a close up of the side. Instead of seeing a
pattern of random cuts, all cuts are parallel and of the same depth.
This is a good indication that the surface has been artificially aged
by mechanical means. Also note that the black finish in the grooves
and the edges of the grooves are in pristine condition. Considering
the extreme wear on the surface, this would be unlikely.

I examined the entire surface and couldn't find a single mineral
deposit. I did see a lot of applied dirt, but none in the small
cracks and cavities, as would be tyical of authentic items.

I'm a little embarassed that it took so long to determine that this
item was a modern reproduction. When I tried to contact Jorge, I
discovered that his website was down, so I did a google search for
Jorge Lanas + Laredo and much to my surprise I found an article
indicating that Jorge had been indicted for smuggling items into the
US, how ironic. Maybe they were not all fakes?

Again, I am not a Trocadero member, nor have I been in communication
with any of its members. My Perularedo experience consists of two
ebay purchases, both of which were fakes.
