Re: [Ancientartifacts] Expert evaluation; Cato90025

Ok. I've been rapt on this particular discussion since the word, "Go!"

I see a list made by one of the more respected dealers I have dealt with on this list telling me to "beware of this seller." And I am going to take it to heart and my personal reference.

When I see several "experts" in the field--private collectors and archaeologists--voice their opinions, I will take notice and heed their warnings.

I am in no way, no how, an expert. Far from it. I love history and want pieces of it. I am in no way a big spender (right now at least) but what I buy I put my trust that it is authentic by buying from reputable dealers here. (BTW: Ernie- I emailed you about some arrowheads during the sale a few weeks back--must have been while your mail was bouncing)

Seeing the defensive posts from Cato90025, I have to wonder. He claims he bought from this one and that one who are "reputable." But do we know that? Does he have COA's and bill's of sale from them?

Personally, if I were to buy an item for the prices he asks, I would like to see the item myself AND have an expert look at it to give the final decision. I don't care who he bought it from and when. Sometimes even the experts can be fooled. But if the seller himself is admitting that he isn't sure of the time period or authenticity, I say he deserves to be on the list of avoidance because he himself is questioning the origin of his wares.

From his posts, he doesn't seem to be so sure himself. I have little history training in my background and I am eager to learn every day, but does he? Or is he one of those who has a bunch of high priced trinkets and likes to show them off?

"Would be" and "May be" real doesn't quite cut it for me.

I expect the dealer to know when, where, and how when I buy.

Sorry Cato90025, but you just seem to be just a touch insecure about the wares you are peddling. If you don't know, then just admit defeat. You can always change your name like Eftis.

Dear group,

A group member and an antiquities expert--who I will not yet name
until I get his approval has evaluated my listings--per my request.

One item was thought to be a modern piece--the small seal is
modern--that has been taken off and will not be sold.

The boat-figure--is not a boat-figure--and I stand corrected,
But may be real.

The bronze urn could be authentic, but would have to be microscoped as
would the Egyptian piece.

Whoever had the problem with the Zeus--the Zeus is also real.

I think this is a valuable lesson--when an expert declares an item is
authentic or that the other items needs to be evaluated under a
microscope there should be no categorical, unqualified assertions that
baldly state they are fake.

Moreover, this enterprise/process is even more questionable when the
self-appointed group blacklister--gleefully threatens, based on these
assertions, to put me on the blacklist.

My hope is that this can constructively move forward--and this does
not escalate. I understand that the dynamic involved naturally
encourages invidiousness.

In closing and hopefully in closure, my offer stands on the Egyptian
piece and I will list the expert when I get approval if he hasn't
announced himself already.
