[Ancientartifacts] Re: How was the BAAF

Bron, Tarquin and I were all there as usual Dianelos.

You should try to liaise a bit before the fair next year. We would be happy to link up with
you.

You are right about the excellent learning opportunities, the variety of excellent stuff, the
affability of the dealers (pleasantness is the sign of the true professional), and the
astronomical prices. They are much higher than last year, and in my opinion, with the
economical situation looming up, rather optimistic.

There were a few reasonable buys to be had, however, if no outright bargains. Remember,
most of these dealers normally pledge to buy back anything they sell at the same price
you paid for them.

I agree with you about the tiny Minoan idol. Definitely over the top - although female
worshipper bronzes are very much less common than male ones. She was a very finely
shaped creature though, viewed from the side, she was very natural.

Don't forget, next time watch this space about one month before the fair so you can link
up. We always enjoy our time in Brussels - good food, good wine and very interesting
discussions on antiquities.

see in one place so many fine items for sale. Especially useful for a newbie who wants to
learn what is available and who is just starting to distinguish authentic items from fakes. I
also found gallery owners to be uniformly nice and talkative people. On the other hand I
found prices to be so high as to be a turn-off. Indeed some were sky-high. For example a
Minoan bronze idol, no larger than my small finger, was offered for 70,000 Euros. A (very
fine) Cycladic idol was offered for 390,000 Euros. I understand these are rare items, but
still. I heard several times about items being sold to museums. BTW there are two BAAFs;
one in June in Brussels and one in November in Basel.
