Thanks. I agree that if there is misrepresentation here it is more likely to be innocent than fraudulent. True I did not complain when I bought the piece in Feb 2007 but I was then very much a newbie. Since then I have bought a lot of Bronze Age pottery and gained more experience. So it seems to me that Ernie should honour his COA now that new information has come to light on the extent of the restorations, and that he would be acting dishonourably if he continues to refuse to help.

IMHO the COA forms part of the terms and conditions of the contract, and from what you say about the wording of the COA, it does indeed guarantee condition as well as authenticity. 

 

If seller has described the areas of restoration, and the restoration has proved more extensive than is described on the COA, then this would seem to be misrepresentation, though it seems that this could be innocent rather than fraudulent - if you did not notice the restoration yourself for some time it seems quite possible that the dealer had not noticed it either.

The COA mentions that the piece "has been restored around the handle and neck and is in extremely good condition". But it appears there is also restoration to the main body of the pot as well. I have tested small areas of the piece with acetone and the red surface (which is supposed to be burnished) comes off easily from both the restored and unrestored areas. I have other red burnished pieces of similar age and culture (4500 years old from the Middle East) which I have tested with acetone and the burnish does not readily come off.

 

I would rather not circulate a picture at this stage because if I reveal too much about the piece members of the Group may be able to identify the seller. I would prefer to keep the seller anonymous at this stage.

Or does COA mention restorations, as you seem to imply.
