given that we sell on Trocadero and eBay (and have been for more than
10 years), the generalized statements that are being made here
regarding the selling of fakes on Trocadero is simply not fair to the
sellers who actually sell ancient items on Troc. Or consistent
statments about all the fakes on eBay, because we also sell on eBay
quite successfully. Does Trocadero allow fakes to be sold? Not
intentionally, and yes, mistakes do get made, but like Axel was
mentioning previously, the Troc community is a bit more self-policing
when fakes/reproductions are brought to Livio's attention (the owner
of Trocadero). If you email Livio directly, he takes necessary
action to get the dealer to remove the suspect items or bans them
from selling on Trocadero all together. Quite different than the
attitude of eBay...
Regarding the comments made about fees/commissions, Trocadero doesn't
work that way – all dealers pay a set monthly fee to be part of
Trocadero and/or Artigua – there is no monetary incentive to allow
fakes to be sold because there are no selling fees on a per-item
basis.
The selling of fake ancient art is a huge problem, but we need to
stop making blanket statements that only serve to confuse and scare
new members/collectors. Instead let's figure out a constructive way
of educating new collectors so they know what to look for (and what
to avoid), what questions to ask, and how to become better informed
so as not to be taken by those that do sell fakes. Whether eBay,
Trocadero, VCoins, or anywhere else, it is ultimately up to buyers to
do their 'due diligence,' meaning proper research about not only the
item(s) in question, but also about the seller's reputation, as
well.
We're here to help, just ask!
