To be brief and clear, when I read (strictly from internet sites) the
laws concerning the discovery and export of antiquities from the
countries I am concerned with, primarily England, Bulgaria and
Germany, there is little middle ground between those laws and the
selling and collecting of antiquities. England has the most sensible
laws but I have contacted some of the people I have bought from and
they all decline to do the paperwork for export as there are enough
buyers that don't request it. They all say that their finds are duly
reported. If I decide to follow the letter of other peoples' laws to
the strictest interpretation, there is no way to buy or sell
antiquities at my level.
If I add in the current international insanity of this grab it all
concept of Cultural Rights (utter nonsense), there is truly no
concept of ethical collecting or dealing.
I choose to continue as I have been, which is buying in the open. I
do not take the responsibility of enforcing English, Bulgarian or
German export laws. At most, there are a few hundred items listed on
ebay.de or ebay.uk under antiquities on any day. It is foolish to say
the the huge governments of those countries cannot click on those
auctions and stop them if they wish. They obviously do not care. As
for the concerns of archeologists, I do not care at all. As for my
own government, "The Government of Peru v. Johnson" ruling seems to
define the position that the US government does not enforce foreign
export laws (but I could be way off here).
I think we have all allowed Paul Barford and his sidekick trevor, to
take over this forum. From their point of view, they have won as this
forum, which is supposed to be devoted to the discussion of
collecting antiquities, is now devoted to defending the hobby and
serving as another podium for yelling the same tired and worn out
anti - collecting theology.
Anyone want some undocumented artifacts? email (letitflyantiques). I
am taking a week off and will be listing a lot of stuff in the middle
of June. I will print out NC export papers for anyone that wants them.
