Fw: [Ancientartifacts] Hollow shabti: (was: Re: ANCIENT ROMAN, GREEK, CELTIC & B

Hi Tim!

Oddities are rare from the Late Ramesside period on. Shabtis were
mass-produced, and there was little room for innovations other than
fashionable trends, most commonly introduced by royal shabti gangs.

There are NK shabtis with headbands, but the *original* TIP seshed was
invented by the Lybian rulers. The shabtis of HPA Masaharta are the
first ones known to wear this headband.

The shabtis of king Tanutamen (25th dynasty) show back pillar or
pedestal. He ruled over Upper Egypt before the Assirians kicked him
out of Thebes. It seems these typical features of Saite ushabtis were
then adopted by the nobles under Psamtek's rule, but it was a long
process. As for the pick, it is not found in TIP shabtis -as a matter
of fact, early Saite period most commonly carry a couple of hoes.

The shabtis of Isetemkheb (Shabaka's daughter and, most likely,
Tanutamen's wife) are pretty interesting too. Her shabtis wear false
beard and the inscriptions are incised, something quite odd in TIP
shabtis.

As for polychrome shabtis older than the New Kingdom, they seem to be
exceptional and cannot be compared to NK polychrome shabtis. Certain
cache 2 pottery shabtis were painted using more than two colours, but
no more than that.

Cheers,

Miguel
